Obesity and Low Back Pain

low back pain

The Palmetto State ranks tenth highest in obesity rates in the United States. According to the most recent data (Sep. 2014) 31.7% of the SC population is obese. Even more frightening, is how fast this population is increasing. This percentage has soared from 21.1% in 2000.

Obesity is a major health concern, because it can lead to stroke, heart disease and cancer (three of the top four leading causes of death). Obesity also affects your health in other ways.

As chiropractors, we see the direct correlation between low back pain and obesity.

  • Postural changes – Additional weight can change a person’s center of gravity (think giant beer belly). This shift in the center of gravity causes postural changes, including a hyperlordosis – increased curvature of the lumbar spine. The hyperlordosis places additional stress on the spine and the intervertebral discs. This pressure can cause low back pain and sciatica.
  • Degenerative changes and osteoarthritis – Increased stress (weight) can speed up degenerative processes, leading to early osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. Bone spurs and decreased disc space can lead to surgery.
  • Loss of muscle tone – A sedentary lifestyle not only increases our chances of becoming obese, but decreases our muscle tone. The core muscles of our stomach and back help support the spine. When these muscles are weak, there is a greater chance of injury and back pain.
